LINCOLN, NE — Today, the Postal Service proudly unveiled the Chief Standing Bear Forever stamp, a fitting tribute to the Native American civil rights pioneer who secured a pivotal court victory in 1879. This momentous ruling established that Native Americans are persons under the law, entitled to the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The dedication ceremony took place amidst the grandeur of the Chief Standing Bear Sculpture at the Centennial Mall, a fitting backdrop for such an honorable occasion. News of this stamp’s issuance is sweeping the nation under the hashtag #ChiefStandingBearStamp, sparking renewed interest in the life and achievements of this remarkable figure.
“Since the inception of our nation, the Postal Service has utilized stamps as a means to commemorate the exceptional legacies of Americans,” said Anton G. Hajjar, vice chairman of the USPS Board of Governors. “Today, we are humbled to continue this tradition with the issuance of the Chief Standing Bear Forever stamp. It’s a reminder that, while our country was founded on the principle of equality, it took us a long time to recognize the inherent humanity of all our people, including the Native Americans who had inhabited these lands for centuries. I hope this stamp serves as a constant reminder of the lessons learned from Chief Standing Bear and the resilient Ponca people, particularly here in Nebraska, the Cornhusker State.”
Chief Standing Bear, born circa 1829 and passing away in 1908, was a esteemed member of the Ponca tribe, whose ancestral home was situated in the lush Niobrara River Valley of northeastern Nebraska. This region, rich in cultural and historical significance, was once part of the vast Great Sioux Reservation established by the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868. However, the federal government later deemed it necessary to resolve conflicts between the Sioux and the smaller Ponca tribe by relocating the latter to the Indian Territory, now known as Oklahoma. Despite these challenges, Chief Standing Bear’s unwavering spirit and commitment to justice left an indelible mark on the annals of Native American history.
